Mexico vs Poland Prediction & Tips

Regardless of the outcome, this match will be historic in the history of world soccer as it will be played in Stadium 974, which will be the first “temporary” stadium to host a World Cup. The venue is made from 974 recycled shipping containers and will be used to host matches throughout the tournament before being dismantled and transported to be rebuilt in Maldonado, Uruguay, where it would be used to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup matches, provided the South American country’s joint bid with Chile, Paraguay and Argentina is successful.

On the eve of its eighth consecutive participation in a World Cup finals and 17th overall, Mexico hopes to mark this special occasion with a victory and thus take a step towards advancing beyond the group stage for the eighth time in a row. However, the Aztec squad usually struggles in the final stages, something that is backed up by the fact that no team has played more World Cup matches (57) without reaching a final, and furthermore, no other country has lost more matches in the history of the competition (27).
“El Tri,” however, are undefeated in their last six World Cup group stage matches (G5, E1), so confidence within the group should be high if it comes to their chances of advancing out of Group C. That will be almost guaranteed if they can replicate the performance they exhibited in the World Cup Qualifiers, where they lost only two of their 14 matches (G8, E4), and where they also kept the most clean sheets (eight) of all CONCACAF teams.
Although they lack the World Cup credentials of their opponents this time around, a Poland team that is looking to make the most of their ninth World Cup finals appearance. The bar is set pretty low for Czesław Michniewicz’s men to make a positive impression, as Poland failed to make it past the group stage in their last three World Cup attempts, losing six of those nine matches (G3).

The “Eagles” also don’t have a great record if it comes to positive starts to World Cups, failing to win any of their last six World Cup debut matches (E3, P3). However, they may look to spread their wings in this clash, as they gained confidence by qualifying via a 2-0 win over Sweden in the playoff final, and also record a 3-1 win over Mexico in the only previous clash between the two in a World Cup – that was at Argentina 1978.
Players to watch: The contributions of Mexico’s Raul Jimenez could prove vital, with his country having won the last 13 games in which they have seen opposition goal. Poland’s star player, Robert Lewandowski, finished as his country’s top scorer during World Cup Qualifying (G9), although he is still awaiting his first goal in the finals of this competition.
Fast Fact: Poland has failed to score in the first half in nine of its last 12 matches.
World Cup Trivia: Mexico appeared in the first World Cup match, losing 4-1 to France on July 13, 1930 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
