Clermont vs Strasbourg Prediction & Tips
A solid start to life in Ligue 1 for Clermont has been well and truly dampened by a run of just one win in eight league games (D1, L6) that’s taken them perilously close to the relegation zone – although that solitary victory did come in their last outing against Angers (0-1). There’s no doubt Clermont’s feet will still be planted firmly to the floor after that victory though, as they haven’t won back-to-back Ligue 1 games since the opening two games of the season.
Keeping a clean sheet here appears key to any further Clermont success, as all four of their Ligue 1 shutouts this season were accompanied by a win. Claiming three points may also require ‘Les Lanciers’ to net first, as not only have they fallen behind 13 times already this campaign – the joint-second worst record in Ligue 1 – they also haven’t turned a deficit into victory in the league all season (D4, L9).
Strasbourg are at the other end of the Ligue 1 spectrum, as they push for a first European group stage appearance since 2005/06. If the first goal goes the way of Strasbourg, there may be no way back for Clermont as ‘Les Bleu et Blanc’ hold an unbeaten Ligue 1 record when scoring first (W6).
It’s a somewhat different story on the road though, with Strasbourg only scoring first in two of their eight Ligue 1 away games so far – a joint-league low. The sight of a newly-promoted side on the horizon certainly won’t be pleasant for Strasbourg either, as they’ve lost nine of their 16 games against such sides since their return to Ligue 1 in 2017/18!
Players to watch: Clermont’s Mohamed Bayo netted the winner in their last Ligue 1 outing, whilst seven of his nine league goals this season have come after half-time. Meanwhile, Strasbourg’s Habib Diallo has netted eight Ligue 1 strikes this campaign, but none have served as match openers.
Hot stat: Strasbourg haven’t played out a goalless Ligue 1 draw on the road since August 2019.
