Tottenham vs Everton Prediction & Tips

Last season was disappointing for both Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, by their standards and with top notch managers at the helm, both sides will be keen to have a good campaign this season. Tottenham starts at home against Everton this Sunday, hoping to have a better start than in 2019/20, when they won just three of their opening 12 games. Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho reported at the team in November and he is all set for his first full season in North London, with the target being to better the sixth place finish last season. Spurs have made key additions in Matt Doherty, Joe Hart and Pierre-Emille Höjberg, all with Premier League experience, while at the same time holding on their star men from the previous campaigns. In their last six matches last season, Spurs went unbeaten and will be looking to start on this backdrop but will want to improve defensively after managing only four clean sheets in their last 13 league matches. They had a better home run though, finishing with four straight wins and Everton was among the casualties then. In their last eight home league matches, Spurs lost just once and won six, while scoring in each of these. The quality in attack for Spurs and the lack of it in defence was very clear; while they scored two or more goals in seven of their last 10 matches, they managed just four clean sheets in the same run. The hosts go to this game unbeaten in 15 matches against Everton.

Everton last beat Spurs in 2012 but with some good transfer additions in the squad, while holding on key men, they will be keen to end that run. Last season The Toffees managed a 12th placed finish, and to address that, Manager Carlo Ancelotti has brought in Colombian star James Rodriguez, experienced Brazilian Allan and Frenchman Abdoulaye Doucoure. The message is clear and should the three click, Everton will have a great midfield as they look to address the fact that they won just 13 of the 38 league games last season. The team’s run towards the end of the season was dreadful; one win in the final six matches and just three wins in 12. Ancelotti’s profile as a manager must have been soiled by this run, which might have informed the transfer activity. But with four clean sheets in the last 17 league matches, perhaps their problem lies deeper and it will be interesting to see how the Spurs forward line with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son handles that. The team did manage to finish with an away win last season, but the 2-1 victory over Sheffield United was just their fifth in the 19 away league matches played. They had a poor run away from home, going winless in their opening five and losing four of their final six. Everton didn’t manage to score in three of their final five away league games and in four of their final seven, they conceded two or more goals.

Everton kept four clean sheets in their last 17 league matches.

Tottenham scored two or more in seven of their last 10 home league matches.

Tottenham are unbeaten in six league matches.

Everton conceded two or more in four of their last seven away league games last season.

Tottenham managed four clean sheets in their last 13 league matches.

Both teams seek a fresh start ahead of this encounter and Spurs will carry the favorites’ tag, not just by their dominance over Everton in recent meetings, but having had a better run too. The hosts head here unbeaten in six matches and with a good scoring run at home. They haven’t been so good defensively though, and this is one area that may trouble them, looking at Everton’s front line. Spurs do have a threat of their own in attack though and that should worry an Everton side with a poor defensive record away from home. We expect both sides to field their newly signed players and on the balance of defensive and attacking strength, we will go with a 2-1 win for the hosts.
