Southampton vs Leicester Prediction & Tips
Southampton are almost safe from relegation despite suffering a 2-1 loss at home to Tottenham last matchday – in that match they fell despite scoring the first goal and that’s the fifth time this has happened to them this season. Premier League (PL), leading the league in that statistic. The “Saints” led the standings on 7 November but have been on a dire streak ever since, as only Sheffield United, already down, have scored fewer points than Southampton’s 20 from then on.
Southampton’s performance has been somewhat better so far this season (they have 20 points to 16 on the road), but their 3-2 win against Burnley in their most recent clash at St. Mary’s Stadium snapped a streak of five commitments without winning in this fiefdom (E1, P4). That last home game also marked the fourth game – of the last six at this venue – where the team that opened the scoring did not win.
Leicester are comfortable in third place in the standings and have come back from their game on Monday – the 62 points they accumulate at this point in the season are their third best all-time record, only surpassed by what was done in the 1962/63 seasons and 2015/16. However, their last three games of the season are against Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham, so the ‘Foxes’ will want to quickly secure their place in the top four of the standings.
Leicester also has the third best record in the entire league as a visitor and has accumulated more points away from home than at home (34 against 28). He should feel confident heading into this clash as he has three consecutive victories visiting Southampton, including a 9-0 win last season. Leicester often work out matches after the break when playing away and their goal difference of +13 in that period is the second best in the entire league. In addition, he failed to score in just two away games in the PL.
Players to watch: Responsible for the set pieces, which represent 42.50% of the team’s goals this season, James Ward-Prowse, of Southampton, has 28 assists in his career with Southampton and is second in the all-time list of the club in that section only behind Matt Le Tissier (63). Meanwhile, Leicester’s Kelechi Iheanacho has scored four goals in his last three away games – and has also scored four goals in his career against Southampton.
Highlight: Nine of the last 12 games between these two teams have recorded at least one goal before half-time.
